The Dell Inspiron Duo is a one of a kind laptop. Dell has designated it as the first true hybrid computer. There are two different types of "computers" when it comes to the ultraportable. One is known as the netbook. These computers typically are very underpowered and are designed specifically to have long battery life. This long battery life comes from the underpowered components that come with the netbook. They also have 10 inch or smaller screens. The other ultraportable is known as the tablet.
A tablet is a computer that is all touch screen that has no physical keyboard or trackpad. Tablets also have excellent battery life with pretty low end components. These computers each have their own things that they are good at. For example, typing up a report in a netbook would be easy. Doing the same thing on a tablet would be horrendously difficult. Virtual keyboard typing speeds are always going to be slower than physical keyboard typing speeds. However, tablets can do things that netbooks cannot, such as allow the user to draw or sketch on the screen.

With the Dell Inspiron Duo convertible hybrid you get the best of both of these types of computer thanks to an innovative new screen design. Usually screens are connected to their frame, otherwise known as the bezel, throughout the entire perimeter. With the free Dell Duo the frame and screen are only connected in two locations that are positioned horizontally across from each other. These are the pivot points. So, when you have the Dell Duo free in laptop mode you have a relatively normal looking computer with a thin line around the screen. When you want to convert it into tablet mode you flip the screen so it faces up and then you close the lid. The screen is now resting on top of the keyboard and you have a fully functioning tablet keyboard.
Many people would automatically assume that, as a hybrid, it's neither going to be a good netbook or tablet but rather a decent combination of both. This simply isn't true. Thanks to tablets and netbooks using the same components, this netbook is able to deliver high performance without suffering in the price tag. With the free Dell Inspiron Duo comes a dual core Intel Atom processor that is rated at 1.5 GHz. This is almost literally twice as fast as other comparable netbooks. Most netbooks come with a single core processor rated at 1.5 GHz or less. Dual core processors vastly expand the ability of a netbook to multi task. The Dell Duo free also comes with a full 2 gigs of ram that perfectly complement the processor speed. Processors can only use so much ram and this particular processor does well with 1 or 2 gigs of ram. The hard drive is large and fast. It has a full 320 gigabytes of storage and is rated at 7200 RPM. That 7200 RPM is 30% faster than comparable hard drives that are rated at 5400 rpm. Almost every netbook and tablet on the market today comes with a 5400 RPM hard drive.
So, as you can see, the Duo comes with high quality parts that blow most netbooks and tablets completely out of the water. It does its' job as a netbook and a tablet better than almost every other computer on the market. The Duo is a great buy for anyone who is looking for a netbook and a tablet.
